Nigel was educated locally and attended King Charles 1st Grammar School in Kidderminster. After leaving school he worked in a variety of jobs including being a Carpet Weaver for 6 years.

He gained an Honours degree in Politics in 1975 from Birmingham Polytechnic,and a Certificate of Education from Worcester College of Higher Education in 1978.

Between 1978 and 1988 Nigel worked in London as Education Officer for the General Federation of Trade Unions, and was a Labour Councillor in the Borough of Haringey.

He served as a Councillor on Wyre Forest District Council for 12 years, and Bewdley Town Council for 7 years. Nigel has held many senior high profile positions in local government including being Mayor of Kidderminster, Chairman of WFDC and Chairman of Worcestershire County Council. He is a member of the Co-op Party and AMICUS Trade Union.

He is married to Jennifer and they have a grown up daughter and son who were educated locally at Bewdley High School.

Nigel has been a member of the Labour Party for 37 years and joined because he believed in equality of opportunity in education, and the underlying principles of the National Health Service, based upon need and not ability to pay.

He has been a writer and published author as well as a full-time politician since 1989.
